What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is a therapy that has evolved from traditional techniques practised in India as part of family rituals for over a thousand years.  Its origins are in the ancient system of medicine known as Ayurveda.

The underlying philosophy is that health results from harmony within one’s whole self.  Massage is part of daily life in India and is an acknowledged method of cleansing and maintaining the health of the body and understood to be an extremely beneficial practice for achieving joy and inspiration.

The treatment involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp with the client remaining seated in an upright position.

Head massage not only proves an invaluable treatment, it also helps relieve stress related problems including headaches, eyestrain and neck/shoulder stiffness.  The skull is covered with a thin layer of muscle which tightens when we are feeling tense, resulting in a headache and/or feeling of anxiety.  By relaxing the muscles, a head massage can improve blood flow, alleviate anxiety and relax your whole body.

There are energy centres in the shoulder, upper back, neck, upper arms and face regions, the treatment of which can benefit the whole body. A combination of rhythmic strokes will soothe and rebalance the energy flow, creating feelings of ease and peace

This relaxing treatment will be combined with Reiki/energy healing to bring you back into balance across your mind, body & spirit.  For more information on Reiki please click here.

Note: Indian Head Massage is not a substitute for medical treatment.  If you have symptoms of illness, you should see your GP

What happens during treatment?

After an initial consultation, you be seated in a chair to keep your spine upright.  You will be asked to remove glasses, earrings, necklaces and any other items which may make you uncomfortable.  Relaxing music will be played through the treatment (unless you request otherwise).

I will gently work through a series of movements over your neck, shoulders, scalp and face.

I will then get you to lie on the bed, where you will be covered with a cosy blanket, and eye mask, and I will carry out Reiki healing (see the Reiki page for more details on this treatment)
